On October 11, Jalen Hurts walked onto the field at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London carrying something far more consequential than the Philadelphia Eagles’ hopes for their season. An ultrasound performed the day before had revealed a superficial blood clot in his left calf, and doctors had evaluated the condition and cleared him to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hurts had spent much of the night before at a hospital being evaluated, did not emerge from the tunnel until just before kickoff, and rode a stationary bike between series. He played the entire game. Eight days later, the Eagles and his agent, Nicole Lynn, announced that the 28-year-old quarterback had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. The player who had been medically cleared to compete is now barred from football activities while he takes blood thinners, and multiple reports say he is expected to miss the rest of the season.
