The modern job search rewards persistence, but applying everywhere may be working against you. With hiring slowing and questionable listings harder to spot, knowing where to spend your time matters as much as having a strong résumé.
You find a position on LinkedIn that seems written for you. The salary is reasonable, the responsibilities match your experience and the company looks promising. You revise your résumé, draft a cover letter, retype details your résumé already covers and press submit. Two weeks pass. Nothing. A month later, the position is still advertised. Then the company posts what appears to be the same job again. You’re left wondering whether anyone read your application, or whether the company was ever seriously hiring. It’s a familiar experience for professionals trying to make their next move.
The numbers help explain why. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent. Meanwhile, a 2026 iHire survey of 1,054 job seekers and 318 employers found that 39.3 percent of job seekers called fake, fraudulent or ghost jobs a major frustration, and 42.8 percent struggled to tell whether a job or employer was legitimate. That doesn’t mean every unanswered application went to a position that didn’t exist. It does suggest that more of the time people spend looking for work is being eaten up by uncertainty.
