How to Recover from a Layoff When the Job Market Isn’t on Your Side

By Social Storytellers Collective News Desk

The first few days after a layoff can feel strangely disorienting. One morning you are answering emails, sitting in meetings and planning the next quarter. The next, you are returning equipment, reading severance paperwork and trying to figure out what happens to your health insurance. The responsibilities that shaped your days disappear, but the bills attached to your life do not.

For many workers, the hardest part comes after the shock. Applications go unanswered, openings draw hundreds of candidates and qualifications that once opened doors no longer guarantee an interview. Employers are reorganizing around artificial intelligence, folding responsibilities together and rethinking how many people they need, which is why a low-hire labor market can feel stable right up until you are the one looking. Getting back to work can take more patience, flexibility and strategy than your last search did.

A layoff is a business decision, but living through one is personal. Recovery means dealing with both without letting either one swallow the other, and these seven steps are a place to start.
