Women Are Using AI as Much as Men. They’re Still More Skeptical About Where It Is Headed.

The gender gap in whether Americans use AI chatbots has effectively disappeared. A new Pew Research Center analysis found that men and women are now equally likely to say they use tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, a significant change from 2024, when men were 11 percentage points more likely to report using them. But equal adoption has not produced equal confidence: men are still more likely to use chatbots daily, with 27% saying they do so compared with 20% of women. Pasted text

The differences become clearer when Pew looks at how people use the technology. Men are somewhat more likely to use chatbots for work, search, entertainment and news, while women are slightly more likely to use them for emotional support or advice. Men are also more likely to report using several specific platforms, including Copilot, Gemini, Grok and Claude, although ChatGPT use is identical among men and women. Pasted text

The larger gap is in how useful and trustworthy the technology feels. Thirty-five percent of men say chatbots help their productivity, compared with 25% of women. Men are also more likely to say they have heard a lot about AI and to describe themselves as highly confident using chatbots. Just over half of men say they have heard a lot about AI overall, compared with 41% of women, while 22% of men say they are extremely or very confident using chatbots, compared with 15% of women.
