The potential acquisition would be the largest restaurant buyout on record, but no formal offer has been reported.
Starbucks has explored acquiring Chipotle Mexican Grill, according to the Financial Times. A deal would bring together two of the country’s best-known restaurant chains and could become the largest restaurant acquisition on record. However, no formal offer has been reported, and neither company has publicly confirmed the discussions.
Chipotle is valued at approximately $41 billion, while the two companies generated a combined $50 billion in annual sales last year. The potential combination would give Starbucks a substantial presence in fast-casual dining while offering Chipotle access to a much larger international footprint.
The companies already share a leadership connection. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol led Chipotle before joining the coffee chain in 2024. Earlier in his career, he held executive positions at Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. His experience across both businesses could make the proposed combination more plausible, although it does not establish that a transaction will move forward.
International expansion could be one incentive. Starbucks operates approximately 41,000 stores worldwide, with about 40% in the United States. Chipotle has roughly 4,200 restaurants, nearly all of them in its domestic market. Access to Starbucks’ global operating experience could help Chipotle expand abroad, although the two chains have different menus, operating models and customer expectations.
The financial case is less straightforward. According to Reuters, an acquisition of this size could face resistance from Starbucks investors. The company has reported four consecutive quarters of comparable sales growth under Niccol, but analysts remain cautious about whether its turnaround has progressed far enough to support such a large investment.
Investors responded to the report by pushing Chipotle shares higher while Starbucks stock slipped slightly. The reaction reflects both the potential value of a takeover for Chipotle shareholders and the financial obligations Starbucks could assume.
For now, the reported discussions remain exploratory. A transaction would require a convincing financing strategy, investor support and a clear explanation of how two distinct restaurant businesses could operate more effectively together. The immediate question is whether Starbucks can justify expanding into a second major restaurant category while its own turnaround remains underway.
