Religion Still Divides the Midterm Electorate. Support for Trump Is Changing Within It.

New Pew Research Center data shows sharply different voting preferences among White evangelicals, Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics and religiously unaffiliated Americans. But even Trump’s strongest religious supporters are less approving than they were at the beginning of his second term.

White evangelical Protestants remain among the Republican Party’s most reliable voting constituencies, but their support for Donald Trump has weakened since the beginning of his second term. A new Pew Research Center survey released October 13 finds that 73% of White evangelical Protestant registered voters favor Republican House candidates, compared with 12% who support Democrats. Yet Trump’s approval among White evangelical adults has fallen from 78% in early 2025 to 58% today. The findings reveal two political realities operating simultaneously: religious identity remains closely associated with party preference, but support for a party does not necessarily translate into equally strong approval of its leading figure.

The Religious Vote Is Not One Voting Bloc

The differences become more pronounced when looking beyond White evangelicals. Among Black Protestant registered voters, 74% support Democratic House candidates, compared with 6% who favor Republicans. Hispanic Catholic voters favor Democrats by 59% to 19%, while White Catholic voters favor Republicans by 50% to 32%. White nonevangelical Protestants are more closely divided, with 45% supporting Republicans and 37% Democrats, a difference Pew says is not statistically significant. The findings demonstrate why treating religious voters as a single political constituency obscures substantial differences associated with race, ethnicity and religious tradition.
