More Than 37 Million People in Myanmar Are Poor or at Risk of Poverty

More than 37 million people in Myanmar, approximately 68% of its population, are living in poverty or vulnerable to falling into it, according to a United Nations Development Programme report released Thursday. The findings, reported by The Associated Press, identify nearly 18 million people already experiencing poverty and another 19.5 million at risk. Armed conflict following the military’s 2021 takeover, weakened public services and prolonged economic instability have compounded the country’s difficulties. The figures show that poverty extends well beyond households already classified as poor, leaving millions exposed to additional economic shocks. The report raises questions about whether humanitarian assistance alone can restore access to basic services when the institutions responsible for delivering them remain under sustained pressure.
