Drake Is Turning 40, and His Wardrobe Is Entering a New Era

Ahead of his milestone birthday, Drake stepped out in New York wearing a dramatic fringed wrap and leather trousers, another sign that men’s fashion no longer follows the old rules.

Drake has never been interested in dressing like everyone else. As the Canadian rapper prepares to turn 40 on October 24, his latest New York appearance suggests he is getting even more comfortable with unconventional choices.

In photographs shared Friday by The Shade Room, Drake is seen leaving a New York restaurant in a camel-colored wrap with long, swinging fringe over a fitted black shirt, loose black leather trousers and chunky black boots. The look blended Western influences, luxury streetwear and the oversized layering that has become more common in men’s fashion. The images drew tens of thousands of likes and thousands of comments, putting his birthday-season style back in the celebrity-fashion conversation.

A Different Kind of Menswear Statement

The wrap was the centerpiece. Draped across his shoulders and falling well below the waist, it added movement and texture to an otherwise monochrome outfit, and against the black leather the warm camel tone stood out.

Not long ago, a look like this would have been unusual in mainstream American menswear. Today, shawls, oversized scarves, flowing outerwear and traditionally gender-fluid silhouettes are increasingly visible in celebrity wardrobes, and musicians and athletes have helped normalize them. The wrap is neither a conventional jacket nor an ordinary scarf. Its appeal comes from living in the space between the two.

That shift is already reshaping men’s style well beyond the red carpet. SSC recently looked at how NBA tunnels made designer bags part of men’s style, from Pharrell putting the Speedy on LeBron’s shoulder to Erling Haaland carrying one of the most talked-about Hermès collections in sports.

Forty Looks Different Now

For much of his career, Drake’s wardrobe has moved between luxury sportswear, varsity jackets, designer outerwear and carefully coordinated streetwear. His NOCTA line with Nike has also made athletic clothing part of his public identity. This outfit points somewhere else. It is less about a traditional hip-hop uniform and more about texture, proportion and individuality.

The timing matters. Hip-hop’s biggest stars are aging alongside their audience, a shift SSC explored in Hip-Hop Is Growing Older. Are Its Male Stars Losing the Audience That Made Them Famous? Jay-Z is selling out stadiums at 56, and Offset and Quavo are approaching 35. For artists at that stage, fashion is one way to stay culturally current without chasing a younger version of themselves.

Drake has not described this outfit as a reinvention. Still, it offers a useful visual marker. At nearly 40, one of hip-hop’s most recognizable figures is showing that personal style doesn’t have to get more conservative with age.

Whether audiences love the fringed wrap or question it, the photographs have done what fashion does best: started a conversation. For Drake, the next decade is beginning with a wardrobe that refuses to blend in.
