New York City’s Commission on Racial Equity has enlisted researchers from Teachers College’s Black Education Research Center for a year-long study examining slavery’s legacies and their continuing effects on Black New Yorkers. According to Teachers College’s announcement, the multidisciplinary team will combine historical evidence, current data and community participation to develop recommendations for city officials, expected next summer. A separate Truth, Healing and Reconciliation process is scheduled to begin in 2028. The project creates a path from documenting racial injustice to proposing remedies, but it does not announce approved reparations payments. Its next test will be what researchers recommend—and which actions city officials commit to carrying out.
